Abstract
An epidemiological survey on dental caries was conducted among 10, 977 Korean young males from 20 to 27 years of age in Seoul National University and amongst military personnel. The purpose of this study was to determine the base-line data of the incidence of dental caries, the health status of individual teeth, and to test the bilaterality in occurence of dental caries with ageing.
The average incidence of dental caries from this study showed 86. 50¡¾0. 32 per cent and the incidence of dental caries slowly increased with age from 79. 62¡¾1. 26 per cent to 92.91¡¾0.75 per cent.
The average number of D.M.F. teeth per mouth of persons examined showed 4.89¡¾3.32 and it also steadly increased with age from 3.95¡¾2.77 to 7.02¡¾3.39.
The dental care of the subjects was found to be grossly neglected, and the ratio in number of de cayed, missing, and filled averaged 1. 00 : 0.14: 0.42 respectively.
The health status of individual teeth observed in this study showed the lower bilateral first molar was most vulnerable to dental caries and the lower bilateral anterior teeth and upper canine showed the highest resistance to caries attack.
The findings of this study indicate that nutritional difference and some soil factors operating during the period of tooth development may have been responsible for the susceptibility to caries. Data from recently caries surveys in Korea tend to support this view.
